Classical Japanese swordsmanship

This is the website for Ginga Dojo, home of MJER iaido under Ikeda Soke in the heart of Kansas City, Missouri.

What is iaido?

Class info:

Weeknight Class. Thursday classes are held at Baila Westside, which is located at 925 West 17th Street in Kansas City, MO 64108. Class is from 7:15-8:15 p.m. Please contact instructor via email for details.

Weekend Class. Sunday classes are also held at Baila Westside. Class is from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Please contact instructor via email for details.

For your first class nothing other than comfortable workout clothes is required. After that, students will need a bokuto (wooden katana) and an obi (belt for iaido). A source of bokuto and obi is www.e-bogu.com. Don’t spend too much on a bokuto, but do get the plastic saya (scabbard). For example, the “high quality oak bokuto (1m) red” is listed at $14.99. You will use these items until you are ready for an iaito (metal training sword). Beginners don’t necessarily need a bokuto for the first class, I have a few loaners, but if you plan to continue you will need your own fairly quickly. No new student, regardless of previous experience, may use an iaito without permission of the instructor. As not all swords are suitable for iaido practice students must discuss options with the instructor before purchasing an iaito/mogito. Likewise, existing iaito may not be approved for use in class. Shinken are never allowed without the express approval of the instructor.

There are numerous sources for clothing; hakama, keikogi, obi, etc. Please consult with the instructor before buying practice clothing. Special clothing is not needed at first, sweat pants and t-shirts are acceptable.
